<![CDATA[Kitchen + Bath Canada - news]]>Tue, 03 Dec 2024 20:41:03 -0800Weebly<![CDATA[Navigating the Unsettled Kitchen and Bath Supply Chain]]>Fri, 20 Sep 2024 14:41:45 GMThttp://kbcexpo.com/news/navigating-the-unsettled-kitchen-and-bath-supply-chain
As the kitchen and bath industry continues to evolve, supply chain disruptions remain a critical concern for professionals in the field. While the situation has improved since the height of the pandemic, kitchen and bath renovations continue to face unique hurdles that require innovative solutions and strategic planning.

Current Industry Landscape
Recent data from the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) provides a mixed but generally optimistic outlook for the industry:
 • The kitchen and bath industry's market size stood at $179 billion at the close of 2023, higher than pre-pandemic levels.
 • For 2024, NKBA forecasts a 3% drop in residential kitchen and bath spending, with market size falling to about $172.9 billion.
 • Despite challenges, most professionals reported a 6.5% increase in year-over-year project completions and expect revenues to increase by 7% in 2024.

Supply Chain Disruptions
The industry continues to grapple with supply chain issues, though the situation is improving. Products that once had lead times of 1-2 weeks now often take 6-8 weeks or more to arrive.
 • Appliances: Lead times have skyrocketed, with some products requiring 6 to 12 months for delivery. Cold storage items and dishwashers are particularly affected
 • Cabinetry: Previously available in 6-8 weeks for semi-custom and 10-14 weeks for custom options, cabinet lead times now range from 14 to 28 weeks.
These delays are attributed to various factors, including shortages of raw materials like lumber, copper, paint pigments, electronic chips, and even foam for refrigerators. In 2021, the supply shortage of bathroom accessories reached 75%, causing more than 90% of home builders to experience supply shortages.

Strategies for Success
To thrive in this challenging environment, industry professionals should consider the following approaches:
 • Start the planning process much earlier than usual to account for extended lead times. This may mean beginning the design phase months before the intended start of construction.
 • Set realistic expectations with clients about potential delays and cost fluctuations. Transparent communication can help manage client expectations and reduce frustration.
 • Work with multiple suppliers to increase the chances of obtaining needed materials. This can help mitigate the risk of a single supplier causing project delays.
 • Place orders for materials and fixtures as early as possible in the project timeline. This is especially crucial for items with known long lead times, such as custom cabinetry or specialty appliances.

Growth Opportunities Abound
While challenges persist, there are signs of improvement and opportunities for growth:
 • Design firms expect an average 5.9% increase in sales in 2024, while building and construction firms anticipate 8.2% growth.
 • Retail sales are projected to grow by more than 5%, and manufacturers expect an increase of more than 7%.
 • By 2027, 24 million homes will be entering their prime ages for remodeling, presenting significant opportunities for the industry.

Cabinet hardware, often seen as the jewelry of cabinetry, has witnessed a significant surge in demand over the years in Canada. This trend reflects broader shifts in consumer preferences, technological advancements, and the evolving landscape of the home improvement and construction industries. Let’s delve into the factors driving this demand and trace its development over the years.
Early Days: Functional Beginnings
In the early 20th century, cabinet hardware in Canada was primarily functional. Homes were modest, and the focus was on utility rather than aesthetics. Hinges, knobs, and pulls were simple and unadorned, made from basic materials like iron and brass. Their primary purpose was to ensure that cabinets operated smoothly and efficiently.
Mid-20th Century: Introduction of Style
Post-World War II, Canada experienced a housing boom. As the economy grew and the middle class expanded, there was a shift towards home ownership and an increased interest in home decor. This period saw the introduction of more stylish and decorative cabinet hardware. Manufacturers began to experiment with different materials and designs, offering homeowners more choices. Chrome and enamel finishes became popular, reflecting the modernist trends of the time.
1980s and 1990s: The Era of Customization
The 1980s and 1990s marked a significant shift towards customization in home design. As interior design became more mainstream, there was a growing demand for unique and personalized cabinet hardware. Homeowners sought pieces that not only served a functional purpose but also complemented their overall decor. This era saw the rise of boutique hardware manufacturers and the introduction of diverse styles, from rustic and vintage to sleek and contemporary.
21st Century: The Age of Innovation
The 21st century has been characterized by rapid technological advancements and a growing emphasis on smart homes. Cabinet hardware has evolved to keep pace with these changes.

Diverse Materials and Finishes: Modern homeowners have an appetite for variety. Manufacturers now offer hardware in a range of materials, including stainless steel, glass, ceramic, and even eco-friendly options like recycled metals. Finishes range from matte black and brushed nickel to antique bronze and polished chrome, catering to a wide array of aesthetic preferences.

Innovative Designs: Design innovation has been a significant driver of demand. Contemporary cabinet hardware often features ergonomic designs, soft-close mechanisms, and concealed hinges that enhance both functionality and aesthetics. These innovations reflect a broader trend towards minimalism and clean lines in modern home design.

Smart Hardware: The advent of smart home technology has also influenced cabinet hardware. Smart locks, touchless cabinet doors, and integrated lighting are becoming increasingly popular, offering homeowners greater convenience and security.

Sustainability: With growing environmental awareness, there is a rising demand for sustainable and eco-friendly cabinet hardware. Manufacturers are responding by using recycled materials and environmentally friendly production processes.

Customization and Personalization: The trend towards customization continues to thrive. Many homeowners seek bespoke hardware solutions that reflect their personal style and complement their unique home decor. Custom-made knobs, pulls, and handles are now widely available, catering to this demand for individuality.

The Future: Looking ahead, the demand for cabinet hardware in Canada is expected to continue its upward trajectory. The ongoing focus on home renovation and improvement, coupled with advancements in design and technology, will drive this growth. <![CDATA[The Growing Demand in Canada’s Kitchen and Bath Market: A Surge in Supply Needs]]>Mon, 22 Jul 2024 18:44:27 GMThttp://kbcexpo.com/news/the-growing-demand-in-canadas-kitchen-and-bath-market-a-surge-in-supply-needs
In recent years, the kitchen and bath market in Canada has experienced remarkable growth. Canada's Cabinet and Vanity Manufacturing industry is expected to grow marginally through 2024. Significant increases in housing starts and residential renovation expenditure in 2021 resulted in revenue rising 16.4% during the year, boosting industry revenue overall. However, the industry has contended with substantial challenges, as falling housing starts in the latter part of the period have limited revenue growth.

Housing starts have struggled because of rising interest rates and high inflation, which have cooled the Canadian economy in 2022, 2023 and 2024. As a result, revenue is estimated to sink in 2024. Nonetheless, industry revenue has grown at a CAGR of 1.8% to $4.9 billion over the past five years, despite a decrease of 1.2% in 2024 alone. 2024 kitchen and bath global revenues are projected to total $173 billion in 2024.

This surge is driven by several factors, including increased consumer interest in home renovation, the growing popularity of open-concept living spaces, and the rising demand for sustainable and high-tech products. As homeowners and industry professionals alike seek to enhance the functionality and aesthetics of these essential spaces, the demand for better supply is on the rise.
The Evolution of Consumer Preferences
Canadian consumers have become increasingly discerning in their choices for kitchen and bath products. Gone are the days when these spaces were purely functional. Today, homeowners view kitchens and bathrooms as integral parts of their living environments, where design and innovation play crucial roles. This shift in perception has led to a significant uptick in renovations and new construction projects aimed at creating spaces that are not only practical but also stylish and comfortable.
One major trend driving this evolution is the emphasis on sustainability. Canadians are becoming more environmentally conscious and are looking for eco-friendly options in their home improvements. This includes energy-efficient appliances, water-saving fixtures, and sustainable materials. As a result, suppliers who can offer green products are seeing increased demand.

The Impact of Technology
The integration of technology into kitchen and bath design is another factor contributing to the market’s growth. Smart kitchens, equipped with connected appliances and automated systems, are becoming increasingly popular. Similarly, smart bathrooms featuring touchless faucets, heated floors, and integrated sound systems are transforming traditional spaces into modern, luxurious retreats.
As technology continues to evolve, consumers are seeking suppliers who can provide cutting-edge products that enhance convenience, efficiency, and comfort. This demand is pushing manufacturers and retailers to innovate and expand their product lines to stay competitive in the market.

The Role of the Real Estate Market
Canada’s robust real estate market also plays a significant role in the rising demand for kitchen and bath products. With property values steadily increasing, homeowners are more willing to invest in high-quality renovations that can enhance the value of their homes. This trend is particularly evident in urban areas, where space optimization and modern design are highly prized.
Additionally, the influx of new homeowners, including young professionals and families, is driving the need for updated and customized kitchen and bath spaces. These demographics tend to prioritize contemporary design and functionality, further fueling the demand for innovative and high-quality products.
Supply Chain Challenges and Opportunities
While the demand for kitchen and bath products is on the rise, suppliers are facing several challenges. Global supply chain disruptions, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, have led to delays and shortages of materials. This has put pressure on manufacturers to find alternative sources and streamline their production processes to meet the growing needs of the market.
However, these challenges also present opportunities. Suppliers who can adapt and innovate in response to supply chain issues are likely to gain a competitive edge. This includes investing in local production, diversifying supplier networks, and leveraging technology to enhance supply chain efficiency.

The Future of Canada’s Kitchen and Bath Market
Looking ahead, the kitchen and bath market in Canada is poised for continued growth. As consumer preferences evolve and technology advances, the demand for high-quality, sustainable, and innovative products will only increase. Suppliers who can meet these demands by offering a diverse range of products, maintaining high standards of quality, and staying ahead of market trends will thrive in this dynamic environment.

Moreover, the rise of online shopping and digital platforms is reshaping the way consumers purchase kitchen and bath products. E-commerce offers convenience and a wider selection, making it easier for consumers to find exactly what they need. Suppliers who embrace digital transformation and invest in robust online platforms will be well-positioned to capture a larger share of the market. Nasser Deeb, Show Director of Kitchen+Bath Canada Expo 2024, has observed a significant increase in international manufacturers participating in this year's event. These companies are eager to establish new supply channels or expand their market share in Canada’s rapidly growing Kitchen+Bath sector. Additionally, our upcoming conference program sessions will address a variety of key industry concerns.

In conclusion, the kitchen and bath market in Canada is experiencing significant growth, driven by evolving consumer preferences, technological advancements, and a strong real estate market. While supply chain challenges exist, they also offer opportunities for innovation and improvement. As demand continues to rise, the future looks bright for suppliers who can adapt and meet the needs of this expanding market.
